This 20-card set was issued to promote the popular Home Run Derby television series, which was broadcast weekly and pitted power hitters against each other in a made-for-television home run hitting contest. Each of the players featured on these black-and-white cards, which measure 3.25 x 5.25 inches, was a contestant in at least one of the televised contests. High-grade singles are very rarely offered, and examples are highly desirable among player and set collectors alike. Bright and crisp, with strong corners and outstanding centering. The reverse is equally crisp and clean. 1959 Home Run Derby is one of the few issues of the late 1950s which is scarce and has always had a mystique.
